10 Facts Most People Do Not Know About
Diabetes!
Diabetes is one of the most widely misunderstood conditions
around, which is surprising considering how widespread it is.
Diabetes is a life-long disease that affects the way your body
handles glucose, a kind of sugar, in your blood. Most people with
the condition have type 2.
415 million people have diabetes in the world and more than 14
million people in the Africa Region; by 2040 this figure will more
than double. There are about 27 million people in the US with it.
Another 86 million have prediabetes: Their blood glucose is not
normal, but not high enough to be diabetes yet There were more
than 1.56 million cases of diabetes in Nigeria in 2015. Statistic:
International Diabetes Federation (IDF )Africa
Here are ten of the most common myths and misconceptions
about this condition and the truth behind them.
1. Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating sugar…
There are two main types of diabetes, helpfully called type 1
and type 2. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease.
It develops when the immune system attacks insulin-
producing beta cells in the pancreas. Without insulin, we can’t
regulate our blood sugar levels, and this can be very dangerous.
We don’t know exactly why the immune system kicks off like this,
but we do know it’s not a “lifestyle choice” – which is one of the
most common misconceptions around. As far as we know, there’s
nothing you can do to prevent type 1 diabetes.
2. Type2 diabetes is not necessarily caused by diet either.
Contrary to popular believe that Type2 diabetes is caused by
poor diet and lifestyle alone, Type 2 diabetes can have many
causes, including genetics and aging. It is also often associated
with obesity. But they’re wrong to do so. This too is a myth.
Type 2 diabetes can have a wide range of causes, including
genetics and the natural rise of blood sugar that occurs as we
get older. At least one in five people diagnosed with type 2
have a healthy weight.
3. There could be as many as four types of diabetes Age-related
Type 2 diabetes is completely different to other causes of type 2.
There are many types of diabetes. Along with the big two,
there’s
gestational diabetes, and many more. Type 3 diabetes is a
proposed term for Alzheimer’s disease, because there are a
lot of links between Alzheimer and blood glucose levels in the
brain.
A recent study suggested that there should be a fourth type of
diabetes.
Type 4 diabetes would describe cases of type 2 diabetes caused
by aging rather than diet or genetics. The researchers came up
with this after finding that the metabolic process was much
different
in cases of type 2 diabetes caused by aging.
4. Diabetes can be very, very serious.
Diabetes can have severe complications if not tightly- managed –
including retinopathy, and sometimes amputation. Diabetes is not
a
mild disease. It is not about having the odd insulin injection or
declining a sugary dessert. Without careful management,
diabetes
can lead to complications. These complications can affect nearly
every part of the body. Heart disease is common, as is
retinopathy
(visual impairment), kidney problems, nerve damage – in extreme
cases, diabetes can lead to amputation.
5. Diabetes takes its toll emotionally:
Some studies estimate that people with diabetes are three times
more
likely to experience depression. Research estimates that people
with
diabetes are either two or three times more likely to go through
depression. It’s not surprising – dealing with a chronic disease
day in,
day out, can lead to feelings of desperation and futility.
There’s a name for the feeling of hopelessness that comes with
diabetes – burnout. People with burnout often neglect to control
their diabetes, making them more likely to develop complications.
It’s a vicious cycle.
Another emotional complication of diabetes is diabulimia –
a condition that predominantly affects young women with
diabetes.
It’s defined as the deliberate skipping of insulin injections in order
to lose weight. It’s as much an issue of body image as an issue of
diabetes, but it shows how tied to mental and emotional well-being
diabetes can be.
6. Diabetes can affect your relationships.
Diabetes can affect your relationships with loved ones. Many’s
the time
we’ve heard stories on the forum of people walking out on their
date
after realizing they had diabetes. It’s unpleasant, and wrong, but
it just
goes to show the extra pressure it can sometimes put on a
relationship –
many people don’t feel ready for the extra responsibility it
brings.
7. A high-fat diet can actually help people with diabetes.
Cutting down on carbohydrates is key to good blood sugar
control,
according to recent studies. Traditionally, the NHS has
advocated
a diet based on starchy carbohydrates for people with diabetes.
Recent research, however, suggests that might not be the best
option. Instead, a low-carb diet has been found to make blood
glucose control easier.
8. Many, many things affect blood sugar levels .
There are many, many factors that affect blood glucose levels,
including
sleep, alcohol, sex and stress. There is a massive number of a
factors
that can affect blood glucose levels. The weather. Stress. Sex.
Pollution. Alcohol. Sleep. Exercise. Flying. Illness. Menstruation.
Pregnancy. Food. Steroids. Anti-psychotic medications.
Dehydration.
Pain. All of these things that can affect your blood glucose
levels.
It’s far more complicated than simply eating the right food.
Diabetes
is like walking a tightrope with lots of people throwing things at
you
and wobbling the rope.
9. Diabetes can affect your sex life too.
Diabetes can affect sexual performance. For men, there’s
erectile dysfunction, which can be caused by nerve damage,
along with retarded ejaculation, reduced sperm quality, and
retrograde ejaculation. For the ladies, sexual complications
include vaginitis and cystitis.
And Finally,
10. Diabetes is Completely Reversible Naturally:

Olajumoke is a lifetime project - Sujimoto
After initially refusing to comment, CEO of Luxury Real Estate
Company, Sujimoto Construction Company, Sijibomi Ogundele,
has finally decided to clear the air on his magnanimity to
Olajumoke.
What stirred your interest in Olajumoke the Bread Seller?
The Olajumoke story could be any Lagosian’s story.
Lagos has a population of about 21 million people. Only
15-20% of these people are the actual indigenes of Lagos.
The remaining majority left their comfort zones to come
look for opportunities in Lagos. My mother came to Lagos
when she was just like Olajumoke, selling Bread and
Bournvita.
She realised that there was more profit in Bournvita than in
Bread. So, she quickly focused on Bournvita and that little
business expanded, transforming her into a Distributor for
Cadbury and one of the top five Distributors for Nestle. About 16
million people living in Lagos today can relate to Olajumoke’s
story, because they are people who left their cities to look for
that great opportunity Lagos has for us.
Can you tell us about the luxury accommodation you gave her?
It is very important for people not to misinterpret our true
intentions. We did not buy Olajumoke an apartment. We have paid
for rent for a few years. We are in the process of furnishing it
tastefully. Someone might say after furnishing it, what next?
What if she cannot renew her rent? Should in three or four
years the rent expire and God forbid she has no capacity to
renew her rent, are we going to leave her? Of course not, we
have an obligation to extend it until she finds her feet. The
Olajumoke story is a lifetime project for us at Sujimoto. It is our
intention to help her discover her true potential and translate
them into success. It is our intention to give educational
scholarships to her children. We will also help empower her
husband to find employment. But first, we will send him for
proper training to enhance his existing skills, because an
aluminum fabricator in Osun state may not have the same level
of expertise as the one in Lagos. We are not going to let
Olajumoke be a celebrity just in the news. She will be an
empowered Celebrity. All this promises we shall achieve before
the end of 2016.
What can Nigerians do for Olajumoke?
As a nation, it is our dreams that unite us and it is its
opportunities that empower us. The patriotic spirit telling us we
are our brothers’ keepers, is what makes this nation the
greatest in Africa. If a man is in Borno state cannot afford food,
that matters to me, even if he is not my biological brother. If a
lady in Enugu finds it difficult to pay for her daughter’s school
fees. It pains me because her daughter might as well be my
sister. If there is a bread hawker from Osun who has no
education or accommodation but has hope that the great city of
Lagos can give her the opportunity to achieve her dreams, why
should I not want to be the first to provide these basic needs for
her? I can’t solve all of her problems, but I will do my bit and hope
society takes it up from there.
The Thomases and the Pessimists: What’s your opinion?
We need to get rid of the Thomases among us who only see the
bad in every situation. In today’s world with all the need for
prayer in this nation, there is no room for pessimism. The only
way this nation can move forward is to start being optimistic and
have faith in the unknown; to have courage in the existing and
show appreciation to the few, instead of condemnation. People
are more attracted to unrewarding conversations. What did you
give her? What did you do for her? Where did you send her? It is
important for us as a nation to start appreciating the good done
by a few people who care enough to do them.
An average Nigerian is a giver, that is why people give so much
to churches and other religious organisations. I want to believe
that the greatness of this nation derives from its peoples’ ability
to be appreciative of the very little things or the kind gestures of
the good Samaritans.

Decomposing body of a 9-year-old young girl who went missing
more than a month ago was found in a stormwater drain on the
corner of Mathlare and Tsomo streets, Mamelodi, SA on February
12.
Zinhle Ndala was playing outside with other children when she
disappeared on the afternoon of January 4. No one can explain
what happened to her. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a
lime t-shirt and brown shoes. Zinhle is a pupil at Zakhele Primary
School and had passed with good grades and was ready to get
into grade 2 this year.
The family was so upset about her disappearance they couldn't
sleep at night. Her anxious mother wandered the streets at night,
hoping she would find her daughter.
The family has reported Zinhle’s disappearance to Mamelodi East
police who have confirmed the case was being investigated.
Forencic tests are underway to officially confirm her identity.
"These results take time and the police wish to do their
work properly. We will not rush forensics,” said Captain
Tsekiso Mofokeng on Monday, February 15.
Zinhle’s mother Thoko said she positively identified her child’s
body at the mortuary from her clothes and hairstyle. Thoko said
she was heartbroken but was consoled by the fact that the
family would now get closure.
"Now we can have a proper funeral."
The date for the funeral is still to be set. Bystanders said a
municipal cleaner saw a skull sticking out from under a black
refuse bag near the entrance of Rethabile sports ground in
Mamelodi East. He alerted the police.

A mysterious creature that looks more like an animal out of a
myth book rather than a real life creature was found washed
ashore on the banks of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales in
Australia.
Ethan Tipper snapped an image of the creature before posting it
online to see if anyone could identify it. The creature has a long,
slender body with scales and a tail like a crocodile with no legs, a
head shaped like a dolphin's and a mouth full of razor sharp
teeth. Can anyone identify this animal ?
