Oladipo-Diya
On this day in 1998; Nigeria’s former deputy Head of state, Gen Oladipyo Diya, and five others were sentenced to death by firing squad for plotting to overthrow military leader Gen. Sani Abacha.
Also on this day in 1989;  Mobil announced that they were divesting from South Africa because congressional restrictions were too costly.
Equally on this day in 1993; A Zambian Air Force (De Havilland Canada DHC-5D )Buffalo carrying the Zambian national soccer team crashed in the Atlantic Ocean just 500 meters offshore from Libreville, Gabon.
The Zambian national soccer team, better known by the nickname Chipolopolo was destined for Dakar to play against Senegal in a world cup qualifier. All thirty on board the plane perished.
Also on this day 1924; Kenneth Kaunda former president of Zambia was born in Chinsali, the Northern Province of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia).
Kaunda was a qualified teacher and taught in a number of schools for years. In 1951, he left teaching to become Organising Secretary of the Northern Rhodesian African National Congress for the Northern Province. In 1959, Kaunda broke away from the ANC and formed his own party, the Zambian National Congress (ZANC).
In 1964, Kaunda became the first president of an independent Zambia. He remained in power until 1991, when he stepped down following pressure from his own people and the international community. He was succeeded by Frederick Chiluba. Since stepping down as president, Kaunda has been involved in various charitable organisations.
Equally on this day 2004; BBC reported that Mangosuthu Buthelezi has lost his job as home affairs minister after his Inkatha Freedom Party fought a bitter campaign against Mr Mbeki’s ANC in the second democratic election in South Africa.
